Classic Texas Burger
There are a lot of misconceptions about Texas, and until you spend some time here, you won’t understand what it’s all about. Some stereotypes ring true, however; one of them is all Texans randomly declaring, “Nobody knows how to do [insert thing here] except Texas!” Occasionally, they’re right; in my humble opinion, one of them is the iconic hamburger. The only condiments allowed on an authentic Texas burger are the topping trinity: yellow mustard, Best Maid dill pickles, and diced white onions. This is documented in the Texas Highways magazine, which, if you have spent any time in our fair state, you’ll know as an authority since there are 314,000 miles of public highways inside our borders. Being epicures, of course, we had to fancy it up a bit, but it remains true to the spirit of the classic Texas Burger.
What is a Texas Burger
A true classic Texas burger has only three toppings -onions, mustard, and pickles. There is no mayo, BBQ sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, and definitely no fried eggs. It’s a simple burger with simple ingredients that let the beef shine. Fletcher Davis of Athens, Texas, is credited with inventing the hamburger in the 1880s. He served them on homemade bread with, you guessed it, pickles, mustard, and onions. While there are others who claim credit for the invention of the hamburger, Fletcher no doubt invented what is the Texas Burger.
How to Make a Texas Burger
Make the burger patties, then refrigerate for 10-15 minutes.
Grill the patties until they have an internal temp of 160°F, then top with cheese.
